Sustainable Gardening

There are many things we can do individually and as a community to be good stewards of our environment. As a member of the Garden Club of America, the Milton Garden Club strives to promote conservation, respect for natural resources, and responsibility for environmental stewardship.

A Sustainable Garden – It’s Easier Than You Think!

Many of us hear the message about sustainability, but don’t always know what to do. Below are just a few links to get you started – or even just get you thinking about getting started – with some environmentally-friendly gardening practices.

Each spring, plant some native plants

Why do we want native plants?

Native plants are not usually invasive, and they are a food source (nectar, pollen, leaves) for local butterflies, insects and birds. Also, because they are adapted to the area and are usually disease-resistant, they need less upkeep and are less likely to require the use of pesticides. This saves you time and money and helps the environment. It’s a win-win!

The Audubon Society’s website has a searchable database of native plants. You can even filter by the type of bird you want to attract!

Plant some bee-friendly plants too!

….but please don’t spray them with pesticides! Take the Healthy Yard Pledge!

The majority of land in the United States is owned by private citizens like us and together we can make a real difference. Studies have shown that even very small amounts of pesticides, fertilizers and pharmaceuticals in our water can adversely impact human health. Taking the pledge is an important and simple step to a cleaner, safer water supply. Take the Healthy Yard Pledge.
